Probing
Probing Procedure: Treatment for Congenital Tear Duct Obstruction in Infants
Excessive tearing, discharge, and crusting around the eyes are common symptoms in newborns and infants with congenital tear duct obstruction. This condition occurs when the nasolacrimal duct, responsible for draining tears from the eye into the nose, does not fully open at birth.
At Özel Sistem Eye Medical Center, our Pediatric Ophthalmology and Oculoplastic Surgery Unit provides advanced diagnostic evaluation and effective treatment options for infants with tear duct obstruction, including probing.
What is Probing?
Probing is a minimally invasive procedure performed to open blocked tear ducts and restore normal tear drainage. Using a thin, specialized probe, the obstructed membrane within the tear duct is gently opened without the need for surgical incisions or stitches.
The procedure is safe, effective, and commonly performed in infants and young children with persistent tear duct obstruction.
Symptoms of Congenital Tear Duct Obstruction
Common signs may include:
- Constant watery eyes (epiphora)
- Yellow or greenish eye discharge
- Crusting of the eyelashes, especially after sleep
- Recurrent eye infections
- Swelling near the inner corner of the eye
An ophthalmologist should always evaluate persistent symptoms.
When is Probing Recommended?
In many infants, tear duct obstruction resolves spontaneously within the first year of life with massage therapy and medical follow-up. However, probing may be recommended in cases where symptoms persist despite conservative treatment.
The procedure is generally considered ideal between 12 and 18 months of age, when success rates are highest.
How is the Procedure Performed?
The probing procedure is performed under sterile operating room conditions with short-term anesthesia to ensure the child's comfort and safety.
The treatment typically includes:
- Gentle dilation of the tear duct opening
- Insertion of a fine probe into the natural tear drainage pathway
- Opening of the obstructed membrane
- Irrigation of the duct system to confirm successful drainage
The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and does not require stitches.
Recovery After Probing
Recovery is generally rapid, and children are usually discharged on the same day. Mild tearing or slight nasal discharge may occur temporarily after the procedure.
Prescribed eye drops should be used regularly during the recovery period, and follow-up examinations are important to monitor treatment success.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Untreated tear duct obstruction may lead to recurrent infections and chronic irritation. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can help restore normal tear drainage, improve comfort, and protect long-term eye health.
